Henceforth I ask not good-fortune, I myself am good-fortune,Henceforth I whimper no more, postpone no more, need nothing,Done with indoor complaints, libraries, querulous criticisms,
While I am I, and you are you,
So long as the world contains us both,
Me the loving and you the loth,
While the one eludes, must the other pursue.
My life is a fault at last, I fear:
It seems too much like a fate, indeed!
Though I do my best I shall scarce succeed.
But what if I fail of my purpose here?
I won't beg for your love: it's laidSafely to rest, let the earth settle.Don't expect my jealous lettersPouring in to plague your bride. But let me, nevertheless, advise you:Give her my poems to read in bed,Give her my portraits to keep it's wise toBe kind like that when newly-wed.
Some say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice. From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
I won't beg for your love: it's laidSafely to rest, let the earth settle.Don't expect my jealous letters
Pouring in to plague your bride.
But let me, nevertheless, advise you:
Give her my poems to read in bed,
Give her my portraits to keep it's wise to
Be kind like that when newly-wed.
